Announcements

Victory!

The Bible Bowl Team from Holy Myrrhbearing Women Mission in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, consisting of Benjamin Horton, Cindy Matthews and Stephanie Matthews, took FIRST PLACE (Yes, the GOLD MEDAL) at the North American Bible Bowl Championships for the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America on July 26th.

The featured study book was 1 Corinthians and they had the material almost memorized...the entire letter! The Dioceses of the West and Northwest had never won a championship before so this was a great first step. Bishop JOSEPH congratulated them and will make a presentation to them when he visits the mission the second Sunday after Pascha.

If you would like to see photos and hear more about the impressive victory, please go to the diocesan website at http://www.antiochianladiocese.org/ under current events (click on Diocese of Los Angeles and the West shines...).

Inquirers' Class at St John the Baptist in Post Falls

St John the Baptist in Post Falls is beginning an Inquirers' Class for those wanting to learn more of Holy Orthodoxy. This class will normally meet on Tuesday evenings, after Vespers (which will be celebrated at 6:00 P.M.) at the home of a family from the parish . For more information and directions, please contact Fr. Basil by phone: (208) 635-5226 or e-mail: frbasil@stjohnorthodox.org.

St Mary Camp Video

Help!

Greek Dinner Festival Baking

It's Festival prep time and here are opportunities to help out in the Holy Trinity kitchen this week. Even if you can only come in for an hour or two, every little bit helps. Go to the back door of the main hall. Phone number: 509-328-9310.

We will be meeting at 9:00 am on Friday 08/08 for Bread Baking & Saturday 08/09 for making Pastitsio.

SNAP Sack Dinner

Assistance is always welcome preparing food for the SNAP Sack Dinner, transporting it to the site and/or serving it. Food prep is every Thursday afternoon in the Holy Trinity kitchen beginning around 12:00 noon. Transport is around 4:00pm.

It has been a tremendous blessing to our parishes to have the opportunity to serve the less fortunate. Christ the Savior's week is the second Thursday of each month and Holy Trinity's week is the third Thursday of each month, but everyone is welcome to help out any week. Dinner is served downtown at Mid-City Concerns, 1222 W 2nd Ave from 5-6 pm.

Warm the Children

If you love to knit you can join several other area Orthodox women who make warm items to send to orphanages in Belarus and other countries. E-mail OrthodoxLifeINW@aol.com for more information.

Lenten Recipe

Spicy Black Bean Soup

Ingredients:

1/2 large onion, chopped
1 carrot, chopped
1 teaspoon garlic, chopped
2 tablespoons habanero pepper sauce
1/2 pinch black pepper
2 cups vegetable broth
2 (15 ounce) cans black beans
1/2 (15 ounce) can whole kernel corn
1/2 (14.5 ounce) can crushed tomatoes

Cooking Instructions:

Saute onion, carrots and garlic for a few minutes. Add habanero pepper sauce and black pepper. Stir in vegetable broth, 1 can of beans and corn. Bring to a boil.

Meanwhile, in a food processor or blender, process remaining can of beans and tomatoes until smooth. Stir into boiling soup mixture, reduce heat to medium, and simmer for 15 minutes.

(Canned tomatoes with hot peppers add a little extra zing, or to turn down the heat, use less habanero sauce.)

A Word from the Saints

"In times past, when heresies prevailed, many chose death through martyrdom and various tortures. Now, when we through the grace of Christ live in a time of profound and perfect peace, we learn for sure that cross and death consist in nothing else than the complete mortification of self-will. He who pursues his own will, however slightly, will never be able to observe the precepts of Christ the Savior."

-St Symeon the New Theologian
